Updates for the new 50 franc banknote

Yesterday the Swiss National Bank (SNB) president Prof. Dr. Thomas J. Jordan presented the new 50 franc banknote in Bern, Switzerland. The new banknote will be issued on 12 April 2016.

It is the first of six banknotes being phased in by the Swiss National Bank between 2016 and 2019. Notes from the eighth series remain valid until further notice.

The inspiration behind the ninth banknote series is ‘The many facets of Switzerland’.
Each denomination depicts a typically Swiss characteristic, which is then illustrated graphically using a range of elements.
The 50-franc note focuses on the wealth of experiences Switzerland has to offer – expressed by the wind, the note’s key motif.
Core design elements in the new series are the hand and the globe, which appear on every denomination.

One of the most remarkable new features is the security paper: The three-layer banknote substrate with a fully transparent polymer core, shall make the new banknote to one of the world’s most secure against counterfeits and guarantee a longer life-time than the average 3 years of the previous eight series.
In combination with complex security features and the sophisticated design it provides state-of-the-art anti-counterfeiting protection.
The new series equips Switzerland with banknotes that are both more modern and more secure than the previous generation. The banknotes are printed by Orell Füssli Security Printing Ltd. and come with a smaller format (70 x 137 mm) which makes the banknote easier to handle.

The banknote has numerous new security features, thereof 15 visible ones on the front side as well as 15 on the backside. The picture below this news text shows the most important of those features on the new banknote.

All the new security features can be viewed in the following document (starting at page 9): http://snb.ch/en/mmr/reference/nb_50/source/nb_50.en.pdf

CI Tech now delivers banknote sensors with the upgrade for the new 50 franc note. And of course, the new currency templates are also available for all existing banknote sensors.

With this step, we ensure, that all our banknote detection systems on the market have access to updated sensor detection software before the new banknotes are even issued, so that they are able to detect them from the very beginning.
