Market news: First counterfeit seizure of the new €100

On May 20, 2021, Europol, the German Regional Criminal Police and the Italian Finance Corps, dismantled an organized crime group involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit banknotes.

The law enforcement officers seized counterfeits for a value of €30 000 including for the first time a new €100 series 2 counterfeit, just six months after its official release by the European Central Bank.

The investigation is part of the Italian DIA Project ONNET, an EU-financed initiative to tackle mafia-type organised crime groups active in Europe. The project was launched at Europol’s headquarters and targets the mafia-style criminal groups in their entirety, rather than one or more of their specific criminal activities.

In cooperation with our broad network, we undertake various preventive and active measures to offer our customers and their end-customers the best possible protection against counterfeits. An overview of our measures can be viewed here.
